In reguards to # 6 the SELF INDULGENT AESTHETICS In the opening scene of the Graduate Dustin Hoffman is in the airport and is literally just standing there on the moving walkway while mike nichols holds one continuous shot of him for at least a couple of minutes before a cut, and this tone is carried throughout the film. Dustin hoffman is standing there not doing anything... (of course his subtle acting is tremendous during this) but this moment couldn't be achieved with out a respect or "eye" for the moment the actor creates during this scene. it conceptually supports the theme of life moving forward as he just stands there, unsure of his future. How is it fair to say and as a general example that, "if a character is supposed to be bored, the filmmaker would shoot the character sitting at a table staring a telephone hoping it will ring. This would be fine for a few seconds, but could be the kiss of death if the shot goes on for more than a couple beats" .It is too general of a statement. Why is he bored? how important is the call? what is the significance of this particular moment? if it is literally just to show him bored, than it doesnt even belong in the movie . There must be a reason the director chose to show this moment, make a point of it. If this shot fails to work it is only because its execution doesnt support the through-line of the scene and or story because either the theme they are trying to convey is unimportant/ irrelevant to the story, the story is boring or the actor is incapable of executing the through-line of the scene properly. Not because the camera didn't cut soon enough. There are countless great movies with long shots artistically showing the beauty of moments humans have alone. In the graduate before anything has been established why wasnt "the audience thinking about what they have planned for the upcoming weekend." and "taken completely out of the film experience." Yes its in the beginning of the movie but keep in mind this tone is throughout the whole movie. Even in the final shot, it holds on a one shot far longer than a "few beats". The root of the problem is not the long shot, its lack of vision, story, acting, or bad direction in the sense of an understanding of material. Or maybe the problem lies in the viewer refusing to open there mind and allow themselves to look deeper into what there watching, its not jersey shore, it supposed to be art. One last note, A good composer must understand all instruments and how to give proper adjustments to the individuals in the orchestra to achieve the proper sound. why should a film director be any different? Why does not one film school in the country have an acting class course for directors?
